    What is a chain?

Unless you are a first time buyer the purchase of your next home will depend on the sale of your existing home.  This of course is the same for the person who owns the house you are buying and so on until you reach a seller who, for example, is moving into rental accommodation.

This group of connected buyers and sellers is called a chain.

Until everyone in the chain is ready to buy and sell, no one part of the chain can exchange contracts.

Typically a chain will comprise half a dozen homes.
