Can I protect the assets that already have if I marry?

Yes you can.  The law now recognises Pre-Nuptial agreements, which are financial agreements entered into in contemplation of marriage, as long as certain legal aspects are complied with.  The court does not have to follow the terms of a Pre-Nuptial agreement, but their contents will be persuasive.
